Owning a sword was a matter of honor and a sign of high status among the Vikings. Out of all the variants, few blades could match up to the pattern-welded sword when it came to performance and beauty. It is created through a tedious process of twisting alternate layers of steel bars around each other, forge-welding them together by hammering and then repeating the process over and over again. The technique results in a blade that is covered with complex and beautiful patterns, and holds such strength that it is nearly impossible to bend or snap in battle.
The Skjome is a rare and unique sword for the discrening customer who values a historically accurate crafting process. It is based on a historical original and has had a massive amount of work and expertise poured into it. The meticulous, time-consuming process of forging the blade into over 500 layers of steel according to authentic Viking techqniques requires rare skills and knowledge that are almost obsolete in our modern world. Each component is hand crafted then fitted and assembled to create the finished Skjome. The end result is a sword that is a unique and functional work of art.
Both the pattern-welded blade and the beautiful hilt with bronze inlays are 100% handmade and originates from Grimfrost’s expert smith who has more than 25 years of experience in accurate historical forging. He has been awarded the Swedish Master's certificate – a rare qualification that entitles him to the rank of Master smith. His craft can be found where quality and authenticity are required, such as in museums, with experimental archeologists and serious collectors.
Reference: The sword in the pictures was made by Grimfrost’s smith to the Västmanlands Läns Museum in Västerås, Sweden – a town with a 1000-year old history – where it is on exhibit.
Worth to note is that the Skjome is hand-forged and not made out of industrial damascus steel, such as offered by Damasteel. Industrial damascus steel is usually what most so called pattern-welded or damascus steel blades are made from today (www.damasteel.se).
