Thor is a prominently mentioned god throughout the recorded history of the Germanic peoples, from the Roman occupation of regions of Germania, to his high popularity during the Viking Age. Thor is associated with thunder, lightning, storms, oak trees, strength, the protection of mankind, and also hallowing, healing and fertility. He wielded the fearsome hammer Mjölnir (English: Crusher) that could level mountains and he rode a chariot that was pulled by the rams Tanngrisnir ("teeth-barer, snarler") and Tanngnjóstr ("teeth grinder").
