Birka and Hovgården – a story that enriches time

By Bente Magnus, Ingrid Gustin and the Swedish National Heritage Board.

Birka was one of the most important settlements during the Viking Age. The town was a busy trading centre with a harbour that saw visitors from near and afar, whilst Hovgården across the bay held the hall of the ruling King. The settlement lasted almost 300 years, from early 700s to late 900s AD, during what is known as the “Birka Epoch”. Birka and Hovgården are today listed as World Heritage Property.

This is a rare opportunity to buy a book that is usually only available at the Visitor Centre of the historical site. The guide to Birka and Hovgården is filled with vivid imagery, photographs, maps and uses current research to present a picture of what the area looked like and how it functioned a thousand years ago. It details why, and by who the early towns and trading places were established. You get to learn how they were ruled, how people lived and how they looked upon the world they lived in. The elaborate history that has been unearthed from below the ground include extensive cemeteries, large mounds, a hill fort with embankments and rampart, the settlement area with remains of a rampart, house terraces, a rune stone and harbors that all witness to the lives and activities of the several thousand people who once lived there.
