"An Early Meal" takes the reader on a journey to discover the food culture of Viking Age Scandinavia. In the first part of the book one will learn about what and how the food was cooked and eaten. These facts are illuminated in the second part, which is a cookbook containing forty-two delicious recipes from seven different Viking Age settlements. Both parts of the book are thoroughly based on archaeological finds, historical cooking methods and current research.

The two authors of the book have a long background in culinary history. Daniel Serra is working on a doctoral thesis on Viking Age food culture and is an experimental culinary archaeologist. Hanna Tunberg has a background as food connoisseur, taste expert and archaeologist.

I feel like I can't praise this book enough. There's nothing better than meet an ancient culture observing the way people used to eat in their everyday life and on occasions.
The first part of the book is esquisitely historical, letting the reader have a better understanding of the period and deeping into the culture, sometimes even debunking some myths.
The second part is all about recipes, which are of insight and of easily understanding. What I've really appreciated are the references to archaeological finds and the instructions to cook food following the ancient method or in a modern way using our technology.
Ingredients are in general quite simple to get from markets; if not, the reader can follow the notes to achieve nice results easily changing some ingredients with more common ones.
The book itself feels nice at the touch, is very refined and has many wonderful photos.
