Thor's hammer pendant encircled by the Viking Elder Futhark runes.
Mjölnir (English: Crusher), is the hammer of Thor, the Norse God of Thunder. An amulet depicting Mjölnir is known as a “Thor’s Hammer” and it was worn by the Vikings as an amulet of protection and power. “Norse mythology tells how the god Odin hung himself from a branch of Yggdrasil, the world tree, pierced himself with his spear, and peered downward into the shadowy waters below calling to the runes. At the end of the ninth night, he at last discovered runic shapes in the waters below. They had accepted his sacrifice and shown themselves to him, revealing to him not only their forms, but also the secrets that lie within them. Equipped with the knowledge of how to wield the runes, Odin became one of the mightiest and most accomplished beings.”
