This unique, exclusive set takes a long time to make and is made only in small quantities.
Chess arrived to Scandinavia during the Viking Age, possibly from Constantinople where Vikings went to trade and for mercenary work. Chess (Old Norse: Skaktafl) is mentioned in Sagas such as Króka-Refs saga where a king is gifted with a chess board in ivory.
Our premium Chess board is carefully handmade from bone with a lindworm design and 'Grimfrost' carved in runes. The squares are made from horn and bone. The set comes with a decorated wooden box with "Skaktafl" carved in runes.
The authentic pieces are cast in bronze and based on Viking Age finds. The theme circles around Odin as the King, with the Valkyries and Aesir by his side. The pawns are cult-warriors of Odin:
King Piece: Based on the Odin Statue found in Lindby, Sweden
Queen Piece: Based on the Freyja pendant found in Askahögen, Sweden
Bishop Piece: Based on the Valkyrie pendant found on Funen, Denmark
Knight Piece: Based on the Freyr statue found in Rällinge, Sweden
Rook Piece: Based on the Thor statue found on Iceland
Pawn Pieces: Based on the Odin's cult warrior pendant found in Upplands-Bro, Sweden.
