If you are looking for top quality Viking footwear that can withstand heavy usage, then look no further! These shoes are made with the same, meticulous craftsmanship as handmade modern shoes. The quality even allows them to be used during winter re-enactment marching.
These shoes are inspired by a find in Hedeby, Denmark, with the characteristic straps and antler toggles of the time. Viking Age shoes lasted only up to 6 months, so we’ve upgraded the boots with tough, thicker leather soles that can withstand a lot of wear an tear. There is also a rubber sole with heel alternative for those wanting maximum comfort and durability.
The leather is untreated. If you will use them in wet conditions, it is a good idea to use leather dubbin to protect them. The leather soles can be slippery at first, but carefully sanding them will immediately give them a better grip.
Historical shoes obviously do not compare to modern shoes in terms of durability or comfort. Avoid using them a lot on modern surfaces, such as concrete, asphalt, gravel and so forth that can wear down the leather sole. It is also possible to fit them with insoles to increase durability, comfort and isolation from water and cold. Vikings would have traditionally used thicker wool socks.
