The Trossingen lyre is a historically inspired plucked instrument, modeled after one of the oldest surviving lyres discovered in Europe. The original lyre was unearthed in a grave near the town of Trossingen in southern Germany, dating back to the early Middle Ages (around the 6th to 7th century).

Crafted from walnut with a birch soundboard, this modern replica uses traditional materials and finishes with linseed oil. Tuned G–A–B–C–D–E and strung with nylon strings,it produces a warm, clear tone well suited for medieval and folk music. 

The lyre’s six strings allowed musicians to play both melodic lines and simple chordal accompaniments. Traditionally, the lyre was plucked or strummed by hand, reflecting it's role in storytelling and ceremonial music during the Viking Age and early medieval Europe.
